He started playing basketball at a very young age under the guidance of his father, Dave who has played college basketball. He joined Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis when he was studying in 6th grade. He was the teammate of Jalen Suggs when he played for his high school team.

Career
During his debut season with Minnehaha Academy, he averaged 6.2 points and 3 rebounds per game. In his second season, Holmgren averaged 18.6 points and 11 rebounds per game and helped his team to win the Class 2A title.
Holmgren has also had a great season with the Amateur Athletic Union team “Grassroots Sizzle” and could manage to win the most valuable player of the tournament award as well.
In early 2022, he scored 9 points, 10 rebounds and a massive 12 blocks against Sierra Canyon School, a team featuring Bronny James, Ziaire Williams and Brandon Boston Jr.
In his senior season, he averaged 21 points and 12.3 rebounds which helped him to win the Class 3A state title. He then joined Gonzaga University to play for the Gonzaga Bulldogs team.
Holmgren recorded 14 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists and 7 blocks in his college debut against Dixie State. He was named Defensive Player of the Year after the end of the regular season. He declared for the NBA 2022 draft in April 2022.
He also played in the 2021 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup for his country, the United States. The 7-feet player led his team to win the gold medal with his impressive performance. He averaged 11.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.7 blocks per game in the tournament.
